Title: Domestication of viruses for the benefit of cells
Prof Andrew Lang received a BSc (Honours) in Biochemistry from Brock University in 1994 followed by a PhD in Microbiology from the University of British Columbia in 2000. After post-doctoral research positions at UBC and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, they joined the Department of Biology at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2006. Their research lab studies a variety of topics within microbiology. One of these is the process of genetic exchange among bacteria, specifically focusing on the activities of virus-like elements called gene transfer agents (GTAs).
